Johnny Depp has reportedly cut ties with the upcoming gangster movie project "Black Mass." According IndieWire.com, Depp has stepped away from the Barry Levinson helmed project after it has fallen into some financial trouble.

The film will tell the story of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger and the unlikely partnership between the FBI and Boston underworld that brought Bulger to justice. Indie Wire reports that Depp is holding firm on a $20 million fee to appear in the project, which failed to drum up investment interest at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

"Black Mass" will be based on a book about Bulger by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. The film will be produced for Cross Creek and Exclusive Media. In the meantime, fans can next see Depp in "The Lone Ranger," set for release July 3.

Joel Edgerton is also reportedly in consideration for the lead in "Black Mass."
