Statins, used in drugs like Zocor and Lipitor given to lower cholesterol, may be harmful to the body's muscle and joint systems, says a study published by JAMA Internal Medicine.

Researchers at the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas surveyed nearly 14,000 active-duty soldiers and veterans, looking for links between the drug and muscle and joint problems.

Those taking statins suffered a 19% greater risk of musculoskeletal problems than non-users. Common problems occurring included dislocations, strains and sprains.

"Do not stop taking statins; these medications have been life-savers for some patients," lead author Dr. Ishak Mansi said. "But talk to your doctor about the benefit-risk ratio for you . . . Advocating widespread use, specifically for primary prevention in otherwise healthy subjects, is unsound."

Statins work by reducing the level of bad cholesterol in the blood and lowering risk of heart attack.
