The Last Ship, Sting's first full-length album of original material in over ten years, is set for release on September 24. According to the New York Times, the Police bassist wrote the LP while working on a musical.
The musical, which may be due for a Broadway debut in 2014, is set in a shipyard near Wallsend, England, where Sting spent his youth.
The Times writes that the story, directed by Joe Mantello (Wicked), is "a homecoming story set against the backdrop of the decline of the shipbuilding industry in Newcastle during the 1980s."
The songs, which Sting has been busy working on for the past three years, play in integral role in telling the story while adding color here and there.
Sacred Love, Sting's previous LP of original material, hit in 2003.
