'The Internship' Could Knock 'Fast & Furious' Out Of Top Box Office Spot

After two weeks of dominance from "Fast & Furious 6," Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson's comedy "The Internship" looks like it's in great shape to finish the weekend as the top overall box office draw as it hits an expected 3,000 total theaters. Another title getting launched this weekend is "The Purge," an R-rated horror-thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, though a smaller release suggests a fairly low ceiling. After very strong box office runs, the weekend could also be the last that "Iron Man 3" and "The Great Gatsby" make it into the top 10 after a dominant stretch at the box office since opening near the beginning of May.

The last time that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson ended up in the same comedy, "Wedding Crashers" became nothing short of a phenomenon with adult audiences, grossing more than $200 million in the U.S. and ending up as one of the top earning R-rated comedies of all-time. Though Vaughn and Wilson have had mixed success with releases since then, distributor Fox would love to see a similar level of audience enthusiasm with "The Internship," which looks to be in a good position now that "The Hangover III" is on the decline.

But while "The Internship" has two popular lead actors and good release timing, it also could be shackled by a PG-13 rating that could soften its impact with adult audiences expecting another "Wedding Crashers." Unlike most movies that have plenty of advanced critics' screenings, "The Internship" also has a complete lack of buzz one way or another, which genuinely signals that the studio is skittish about showing it off to critics. There should still be enough of an audience to help "The Internship" break $20 million and land as the top box office draw, though it seems unlikely it will have a long and successful run in theaters.

Aiming at a mostly different audience this weekend is R-rated horror-thriller "The Purge," which is slated to hit an estimated 2,400 theaters this weekend for Universal. Without a major horror presence currently in theaters, "The Purge" should have some appeal to moviegoers not interested in "The Internship" or the other action blockbusters that are currently on the decline, likely leading to a decent but unspectacular opening. Expect "The Purge" to earn somewhere in the $15-$18 million range this weekend as it looks to scare up a few audiences for Universal.

As "The Purge" and "The Internship" hope to secure audiences this weekend, a lack of a new big-budget action releases should mean strong numbers once again for "Fast & Furious 6," "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Iron Man 3." Heading into its third weekend in theaters, "Fast & Furious 6" is already rapidly approaching $200 million in the U.S. and $500 million worldwide, making it exactly the smash hit that Universal was hoping it would be. Meanwhile, "Star Trek Into Darkness" has seen lower than expected numbers, but it should also break past $200 million domestically very soon and it should still be able to finish with similar numbers as the 2009 franchise reboot.

As "Star Trek" and "Fast & Furious 6" continue to connect with audiences, the remainder of the action crowd will likely find their way into "Iron Man 3," which has been a box office standout since its monstrous opening to kick off the summer release schedule. "Iron Man 3" is far and away the top grossing movie of 2013 so far, with domestic numbers approaching $400 million and worldwide figures expected to break $1.2 billion sometime soon. But with "Man of Steel" hitting theaters next weekend, "Iron Man 3" should finally be headed out of the top 10 after being a dominant box office force for more than a month.

Next weekend, Zack Snyder's big-budget Superman reboot "Man of Steel" hits theaters with enormous expectations from distributor Warner Brothers, with an all-star cast that includes Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and relative newcomer Henry Cavill. "This is the End" also hits theaters on June 12th, bringing an all-star comedic lineup that includes Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Michael Cera and Danny McBride.
