Southwest Airlines May Traffic, Capacity, Load Factor Up - Quick Facts

Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV: Quote) reported a 4.2 percent year-over-year growth in May 2013 traffic, on a capacity increase of 3.4 percent.

The company said it flew 9.35 billion revenue passenger miles or RPMs in the recent month, up 4.2 percent from the 9.0 billion RPMs flown in May 2012. Available seat miles or ASMs climbed 3.4 percent to 11.41 billion from the prior year level of 11.0 billion, with monthly load factor rising 0.6 percentage points to 81.9 percent, from 81.3 percent a year before.

During the month of May 2013, passenger revenue per ASM or PRASM is estimated to have decreased nearly two percent compared with last year.

Germany consumer confidence is set to improve further in August to the strongest level since December 2006 despite escalating geopolitical tensions in Israel and Ukraine, data from market research group GfK showed Friday. The forward-looking consumer sentiment index rose to 9 in August, while it was expected to remain unchanged at 8.9. This was the highest value recorded since December 2006. The company's quarterly loss per share was also wider than what analysts expected, but is quarterly sales came in line with analysts' forecast. The company also forecast an operating loss for the current quarter. After failing to sustain an initial upward move, stocks showed a lack of direction throughout much of the trading day on Thursday. The major averages eventually closed nearly unchanged, turning in a mixed performance for the second straight day.
