The unemployment rate in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) area remained unchanged at 8 percent in April, but the trend was divergent among the major member countries, latest data showed Tuesday.

In Canada and Japan , the unemployment rates stayed stable at 7.2 percent, and 4.1 percent respectively in April.

US' unemployment rate dropped 0.1 percentage point to 7.5 percent, and the figure for Korea recorded a similar decrease and reached 3.1 percent.

Meanwhile, the jobless rate in the Eurozone rose by 0.1 percentage point from the previous month and hit a new record high of 12.2 percent in April. The figure was 1.3 percentage point above its mid-90's peak.

Unemployment trends across the member countries have diverged significantly since the beginning of the economic and financial crisis, the report said.

Overall, there were 48.5 million people unemployed in the OECD area in April, which was 0.2 million more than in March.
