JetBlue Airways May Traffic, Capacity Rise

JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) on Tuesday announced traffic results for the month of May, reporting an increase in traffic, capacity and load factor compared to last year.

New York-based JetBlue's preliminary passenger revenue per available seat mile or PRASM for May increased 1 percent year over year. The company had earlier projected PRASM for the month to increase between zero and one percent year over year.

JetBlue's traffic in May, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, increased 9.4 percent to 2.99 billion from 2.73 billion in the prior-year period. Capacity, measured in available seat miles or ASMs, grew 9.0 percent to 3.51 billion from 3.22 billion in the same period last year.

Load factor for the month was 85.1 percent, up 0.3 points from 84.8 percent in the year-ago period.

The company's revenue passengers for the month rose 8 percent to 2.56 million from 2.37 million in the year-ago period.

For the year-to-date period, JetBlue's traffic rose 7.3 percent from the prior-year period to 14.49 billion RPMs, while capacity increased 6.9 percent to 17.23 billion ASMs. Load factor rose 0.3 points to 84.1 percent.

Looking ahead, JetBlue expects PRASM for the month of June to be relatively flat year over year.

JBLU closed Monday's trading at $6.40. In Tuesday's pre-market, the stock is down $0.09 or 1.41 percent to $6.31.
