Lufthansa Group May Traffic, Capacity, Load Factor Rises

German aviation group Deutsche Lufthansa AG (DLAKY,DLAKF) announced Tuesday that the group flew 0.8 percent more passengers in the month of May compared to last year. Traffic or sales, for the group grew 4.0 percent, capacity increased 3.4 percent and passenger load factor improved 0.4 percentage points.

The number of flights the group operated during the month dropped 4.0 percent to 90,934 from last year.

The company noted that the number of flights declined as the month of May was affected by changes in the dates of public holidays compared with last year. The month was also affected by a deliberately higher proportion of economy passengers and a continued weaker performance in Asia.

Lufthansa Group reported a 0.8 percent increase in passengers flown in May to 9.38 million from the year-ago month. Passenger numbers were higher in the American region (north and South), and Europe region, while it declined in Asia Pacific and Middle East/Africa regions.

During the month, Lufthansa passenger airlines, including Germanwings, reported a 0.9 percent growth in passengers flown, and Swiss Air reported a 3.6 percent increase, while it was down 3.6 percent at Austrian Airlines.

The number of flights the group operated during the month dropped 4.0 percent to 90,934 from last year.

The group's total traffic in terms of revenue seat-kilometers was 18.45 billion in May, up 4.0 percent from May 2012. Lufthansa's total capacity, which is measured as available seat-kilometers, grew 3.4 percent for the month to 23.59 billion. Passenger load factor was up 0.4 percentage points year-over-year to 78.2 percent.

In the German carrier Lufthansa Passenger Airlines, capacity grew 4.2 percent, and traffic increased 4.5 percent. Passenger load factor was also up 0.2 percentage points from last year. Number of passengers flown increased 0.9 percent from last year.

In the logistics business segment, the Lufthansa Group's transported volume of freight and mail declined 1.9 percent to 165,000 tonnes. However, the group's cargo load factor improved 0.3 percentage points to 67.0 percent.

Lufthansa Airlines cargo's transported volume of freight and mail also decreased 2.2 percent to 144,000 tonnes from last year. However, the cargo load factor was up 1.6 percentage points to 67.8 percent. The airline cut cargo capacity by 3.1 percent, leading to a 0.8 percent decline in sales.

In Frankfurt's XETRA exchange, the company's shares are trading in Tuesday's trading session at 16.50 euros, up 0.06 euros or 0.36% on a volume of 2.01 million shares.
