Facebook, Inc. (FB) Wednesday announced the introduction of hashtags, which allows the user to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion.
When a user clicks on a hashtag in Facebook, a feed will be seen of what other people and pages are saying about that event or topic.
One can search for a specific hashtag from the search bar and click on hashtags that originate on other services such as Instagram. The user can compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results. Audience for the posts will be controlled by the user.
The social network giant said hundreds of millions of people use Facebook everyday to share their thoughts on big moments happening all around them. ''Whether it's talking about a favorite television show, cheering on a hometown sports team or engaging with friends during a breaking news event—people on Facebook connect with their friends about what's taking place all over the world.''
''Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations,'' Facebook noted.
Facebook said it would continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months. This includes trending hashtags and deeper insights, which help people discover more of the world's conversations.
FB closed down 1.1 percent on Wednesday at $23.77.
