A leading critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin won political support on Friday to run in the election for the post of the mayor of Moscow.

The 37-year old Alexei Navalny, who led a wave of street protests against Putin's 13-year rule more than a year ago, was endorsed by the opposition party RPR-PARNAS.

The Moscow mayoral election is set to take place in September. The leading contender for the post is the Kremlin-backed Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

However, recent months have seen several criminal cases being launched against Navalny. His bid for the Moscow mayor post could be hurt if he is found guilty in a crucial trial involving charges of theft from a state-owned timber firm.
