John Mellencamp Says Son Gave Him A Black Eye

John Mellencamp has opened up to explain the black eye he's conspicuously sported during a handful of recent television interviews. The singer has been making the rounds to plug his new musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, giving him the chance to talk about the shiner with David Letterman.

In most interviews, the hosts have politely ignored the black and blue welt under John's left eye, but Letterman couldn't resist, asking: "Was there trouble back stage?"

As it turns out, Mellencamp had a bit of a scuffle with his teenage son:

"My son and I had words, and he got a punch in and I didn't," he said adding: "He's 6'2" and weighs almost 200 pounds."

Letterman went on to ask why he got into the scuffle with his son, to which John replied somewhat cryptically:

"My son punches me, and my dad calls me and says, 'John, you need to change your attitude,'" he said.
