Consuming too much sugar could be linked with increased risk of heart failure, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Texas. According to the study even just one increased molecule of glucose metabolite glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) can begin the process of improper heart function.

This molecule, combined with excess starch, can cause a build-up that places stress on the heart and can lead to heart failure. Lead researcher Heinrich Taegtmeyer says the prevention is truly the best medicine in this case:

"Treatment is difficult. Physicians can give diuretics to control the fluid, and beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors to lower the stress on the heart and allow it to pump more economically. But we still have these terrible statistics and no new treatment for the past 20 years."
