Despite its new support from the Obama administration the emergency contraceptive pill Plan-B One Step is still behind the counter at most pharmacies. According to the Boston Globe, drug maker Teva says it could take weeks before it is repackaged for retail sales.
"We have not yet had [newly packaged] product shipped to stores and don't anticipate they will be for another month or so," Teva vice president Denise Bradley told the Globe.
President Obama made a surprising reversal of his previous position on the ruling earlier this month. He had previously vowed to block a proposition to make the drug available to all women over the age of 15 as an over-the-counter product. The new ruling will, however, make the $50 hormone treatment available without a prescription.
Plan-B One Step is a hormone-based treatment that will prevent pregnancy in women if taken within three days of unprotected sex.
