A rise in gang violence in Chicago has led to the most deadly weekend of the year for the city, with a reported nine people killed over the last three days.
Reuters reports that two of the nine people killed were police shootings and that there were 26 shootings in total between last Friday and Sunday.
Authorities in Chicago are saying that the overall murder rate in the city is down overall.
"While we've had fewer murders to date this year than any year since the mid-1960s, there's more work to be done and whether it's police, clergy, community organizations, parents or residents, we all have a role to play in continuing to reduce violence," said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
So far, there have been a reported 738 shootings in Chicago in 2013, which is down from 1,010 reported at this time last year.
