Authorities in Lincoln City, Oregon have arrested a suspect in connection with an accident that killed a man hoping to dribble a soccer ball from Seattle to Sao Paolo, Brazil. The death of 42-year-old Richard Swanson made national headlines last month and Portland's KGW TV reports that police have now arrested Scott Von Hiatt, of Neskowin, Oregon.
Hiatt remained at the scene of the accident and, according to KGW, cooperated in the investigation. Authorities announced on Monday that Hiatt has been indicted on criminally negligent homicide and that he was released on $50,000 bond following his arrest.
Swanson was attempting to dribble a soccer ball to Brazil to raise money and awareness for the One World Futbol charity. He was planning to spend a year on the hike and was rely on friends and strangers to provide housing along the journey.
A group of six witnesses were reportedly interviewed before Hiatt's arrest, but thus far no other details about the nature of the accident have been released.
