Jennifer Lopez has signed up to star in The 33, a film based on the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped in a collapsed mine for 69 days in 2010. Lopez joins Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro in the drama-thriller.

"One year after the collapse of the mine, we consider this to be a great step towards the realization of a film based on our experience in the mine," Chilean miner Juan Andrés Illanes told the Hollywood Reporter. "This is the only official and authorized film about what we lived in the San José mine. Much of our story has never been told."

The film, which features a script by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries), is directed by Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna). Production begins in Chile this fall.
