The city of Los Angeles has voted Tuesday to ban plastic grocery bags in the city, the Los Angeles Times is reporting. The move makes L.A. the largest city to ban the bags in an effort to be more environmentally-conscious.
The city passed an ordinance that would ban plastic bags from grocery stores, mini marts and large retail chains like Target and Wal-Mart.
The ban goes into effect for larger stores Jan. 1, 2014 and July 1, 2014 for smaller stores.
Customers will have to use reusable bags or pay a 10 cent fee for each paper bag they use from the store.
The vote is seen as a victory for environmental groups who have been trying keep plastic bags out of landfills, waterways and oceans.
