Arizona Senator John McCain on Sunday said that he believes this past week's change of government in Egypt was a coup, and that the United States should suspend all aid to that nation.
Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," McCain called it a failure of American leadership in the region that the Egyptian army has had to act twice in less than three years to affect a change.
"It was a coup, and it was the second time in two-and-a-half years that we have seen the military step in. It's a strong indicator of the lack of American leadership and influence since we've urged the military not to do that," McCain said. "Reluctantly, I believe that we have to suspend aid until such time as there is a new constitution and a free and fair election."
The Egyptian army removed President Mohammed Morsi from power this past week, touching off sometimes violent protests both pro and con.
