At least three people were killed in a multiple car accident on Interstate 94 near Michigan City, Indiana, police said.
Weather played a huge factor as heavy snow was in the northwest corner of the state, not far from Lake Michigan. The crash involved at least 15 tractor-trailers and an undetermined number of other cars, Indiana State Police said.
Eastbound lanes of I-94 have been shut down until further notice and traffic has been detoured to another location.
The Northwest Indiana Times reported authorities blamed whiteout conditions for the multiple crashes on the Interstate. Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles with hardly any movement, WLS-TV, Chicago, reported.
La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan said he expects the death toll to rise from the original count.
