'Three-Parent Baby' Fertility Treatment To Get Go-Ahead - HEALTH

A new controversial "three-parent baby" treatment may be available on the United Kingdoms National Health Service plan by next spring.

The Daily Mail reports that "An independent panel of experts has cleared away remaining safety hurdles to recommend "cautious adoption" of mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) for devastating inherited diseases."

The focus is to exchange "abnormal genes in the mitochondria, rod-like power plants in cells that generate energy." The process is done by transferring the genetic material that effectively encodes a baby's identity to a donor egg whose own nuclear DNA has been removed." The Daily Mail also noted that "Mothers undergoing the untried procedure will effectively be human guinea pigs whose experiences will be written up in scientific journals."
