Facebook Working On Brain-Computer Interface

It will be an absolute revolution in communication, as Facebook is working on a technology that would enable brains to type and skin to hear. Instead of implanting anything into the brain, Facebook is planning non-invasive ways of using wearable sensors.

The social media giant said it has been working on a brain-to-computer interface that would help in sending thoughts direct to a computer. Another technology on the anvil is hearing through the skin using vibrations as a language. The system will use actuators and sensors to "hear."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the new system would enable brain to type five times faster than typing on the phone.

Building 8, a secretive segment of Facebook, has been working to develop innovative technologies that would really transform communication. Regina Dugan, who heads the skunkwork efforts of Building 8 is keen to bring out things that "people don't know to ask for."

In a Facebook post, Regina had said last year that the company signed with 17 Universities under the Sponsored Academic Research Agreement for faster turnaround. The aim was to type 100 words a minute on a computer by just thinking about it.

Regina believes that in future one will be able to think in Mandarin, and feel in Spanish.
