Monday, President Donald Trump will talk in a video-conference call from the Oval Office to congratulate the current commander of the International Space Station - Peggy Whitson, who holds the record for the most spacewalks by a female astronaut.

On the same day, Dr. Whitson will also break another record - for the most cumulative days in space of any American astronaut.

She is engaged in research aboard the International Space Station along with US astronaut Jack Fischer.

The President looks forward to personally congratulating her and NASA on this incredible accomplishment, and to thanking her and Mr. Fischer for their service to our country in the cause of exploration and discovery, the White House said.

The President will be joined in the Oval Office by his daughter Ivanka Trump and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins at the video-conference call, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.

After congratulating Dr. Whitson, the group will have a 20-minute conversation about life aboard the International Space Station, NASA's mission, and the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.

In addition to signing the NASA Transition Authorization Act, the President also recently signed the INSPIRE Women Act, which ensures that NASA will continue recruiting women for important STEM-related jobs in aerospace.

The President's call will be livestreamed to the public on White House and NASA online platforms.

A biochemist by profession, Whitson has several records in aerospace history in her name. She became the first female commander of the ISS in 2007. Whitson is NASA's most experienced female astronaut, with 376 days in space.

She went on her eighth spacewalk on March 30 and surpassed astronaut Sunita Williams' record for the most spacewalks by a female astronaut. The 57-year-old astronaut is also the oldest female spacewalker.
