The local post office in Bakersfield, California is reportedly set to be named after Merle Haggard. The country legend helped define a style of country music that has become known as the Bakersfield Sound and the new honor is an initiative of Bakersfield area U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy.

Haggard was a native of Bakersfield and helped mold the history of country music by incorporating elements of electric rock and folk into the genre. The House resolution from McCarthy is aimed at reconnecting the area with its cultural heritage, according to the Congressman. It must first pass the Senate and then be ratified by President Trump to take effect.

Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. The singer died in 2016 at age 79 and a series of tribute concerts and personal tributes from country music's biggest names followed shortly after his passing.
