Japan Eco Watchers' Index Remains Stable In August

A measure of peoples' assessment of the Japanese economy held steady in August, after falling in the prior month, survey figures from the Cabinet Office showed Friday.

The current index of Economy Watchers' survey came in at 49.7 in August, the same reading as in July. Economists had expected the index to fall to 49.5.

Any reading above 50 indicates optimism and a score below 50 suggests pessimism.

At the same time, the outlook index improved unexpectedly in August. It rose to 51.1 from 50.3 in the preceding month. The index was forecast to remain stable at 50.3.
