Tesla Extends Range To Help People Escape Irma

Tesla has remotely extended the range of some Florida vehicles for drivers to escape Hurricane Irma, reports said. The company pushed out an over-the-air temporary update within the evacuation zones in advance of Irma's arrival.

The update reportedly unlocks the full battery capacity of 60 and 70 kWh vehicles through September 16.

Tesla generally includes the same batteries in many of its models, but some are software locked to use only 80 percent of that available power. Drivers reportedly could unlock that extra capacity with an update for an additional $3,000.

Tesla last year sold a 60kWh version of its Model S and Model X vehicles, but those batteries were actually rated at 75kWh.

The company now upgraded the lower 60 kilowatt-hour range, which the company no longer offers in favor of higher options, to the battery's full 75 kWh potential through a software update this week.

The update would provide those trying to escape the storm with an additional 30 to 40 miles above the typical range of the vehicle.

A Tesla spokesperson reportedly confirmed that certain vehicles in Florida were temporarily updated to help with evacuations.
