Search giant Google, owned by Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL,GOOG), on Monday launched an appeal against the European Union's record anti-trust fine of 2.4 billion euro or $2.9 billion.

In June, the European Commission slapped Google with $2.74 billion in fine for anti-trust violations related to the search engine giant's favoritism towards its online shopping service over competitors. The regulator ordered the company to stop the practice by September. 28.

Google has previously said it disagreed with the EU decision and had indicated it would file an appeal.

Meanwhile, last week, the EU's highest court backed Intel Corp.'s (INTC) appeal of a €1.06 billion antitrust fine from 2009.
