Trump: Meeting With Military Leaders May Be 'Calm Before The Storm'

President Donald Trump made cryptic remarks following a meeting with senior defense and military leaders Thursday evening that have raised questions about the possibility of near-term military action by the U.S.

"Maybe it's the calm before the storm," Trump said of the meeting before adding, "We have the world's great military leaders in this room."

Pressed by reporters on what he meant by his "calm before the storm" remark, Trump would only say, "You'll find out."

A White House statement said the meeting was held to review progress in protecting the homeland, advancing American prosperity, pursuing peace through strength, and promoting positive American influence abroad.

Trump also relayed his national security priorities and how the Defense Department can continue to advance them, the White House said.

In remarks ahead of the meeting, Trump said the U.S. is facing many pressing national security issues, specifically pointing to the threats posed by North Korea and Iran.

"In North Korea, our goal is denuclearization," Trump said. "We cannot allow this dictatorship to threaten our nation or our allies with unimaginable loss of life."

"We will do what we must do to prevent that from happening," he added. "And it will be done, if necessary -- believe me."

Trump also said Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons and claimed the Islamic republic is not living up to the spirit of the international agreement to curb its nuclear program.

"The Iranian regime supports terrorism and exports violence, bloodshed, and chaos across the Middle East," Trump said. "That is why we must put an end to Iran's continued aggression and nuclear ambitions."

The comments from Trump come as he is reportedly considering decertifying the Iran nuclear deal, with the president telling reporters an announcement would be coming "very shortly."

Trump told the leaders attending the meeting he expects them to provide him with a broad range of military options at a much faster pace when needed.
