The 10 Most Expensive States For Healthcare

Healthcare is very expensive in the U.S., in fact among the most expensive in the world by most measures. Health care facilities are largely owned and operated by businesses in the private sector.

Most Americans have access to health care, though costs and services vary from state to state. However, higher costs do not necessarily translate into better results. The U.S. continues to be outperformed by other wealthy nations on several measures like life expectancy, disease burden and health coverage.

The adoption of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as "Obamacare", resulted in a huge fall in the percentage of Americans without health insurance.

At the same time, the law's mandate that everyone has coverage - either through employers or public health care programs - or pay a tax penalty, has made the measure politically controversial since its inception.

In addition, the increase in Obamacare premiums has confirmed that the program is in deep trouble, with some people believing that the landmark healthcare initiative that was supposed to make coverage available to all Americans is in a death spiral. There are premium increases of more than 100 percent in some cases.

Here is a list of the top ten states that have the highest insurance costs and also have the highest increase in Obamacare premiums in 2017 compared to the prior year.

The list is based on data from the Department of Health and Human Services, the premium information is for a 27-year-old earning $25,000 annually and who has purchased the second-lowest cost plan at the silver plan.
