Sensex, Nifty Log Fresh Record Highs

Indian shares rose to log fresh record highs on Tuesday even as overall gains remained modest ahead of macroeconomic data and key corporate earnings due this week.

The benchmark BSE Sensex ended up by 90.40 points or 0.26 percent at 34,443.19, while the broader Nifty index rose by 13.40 points or 0.13 percent to 10,637.

Coal India jumped as much as 5.8 percent on price hike buzz. Yes Bank rallied 2.4 percent while Reliance Industries, Wipro and ITC rose 1-2 percent.

On the flip side, Bajaj Finance, Hindalco, Infratel, Eicher Motor and Zee Entertainment Enterprises fell 1-2 percent.

Globally, Asian stocks closed mostly higher as investors digested earnings guidance from tech heavyweight Samsung Electronics and kept an eye on ongoing talks between South Korea and North Korea, the first formal talk between the two Koreas in more than two years.

European markets rose to extend gains from the previous session, although the momentum appeared to have slowed somewhat after the Bank of Japan trimmed the size of its bond-repurchase offer in its latest market operation.
