Expedia Posting Steep Loss On Disappointing Q4 Earnings

Shares of Expedia (EXPE) continue to see significant weakness in afternoon trading on Friday after an early move to the downside. After hitting its lowest intraday level in well over a year, Expedia is currently down by 17.8 percent.

The steep drop by Expedia comes after the travel services company reported weaker than expected fourth quarter earnings.

Financial services firm American Express or Amex has filed a patent for a blockchain-based system that can match the images of a receipt with stored records. According to a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or USPTO patent filing, named "Linking digital images with related records", the system offers a new method to receive, record and transmit images of receipts. Merck KGaA reported Wednesday a sharp decline in its third-quarter profit, while sales increased despite negative currency impacts. Further, the German drugmaker lowered its fiscal 2018 forecast for EBITDA pre, but confirmed organic EBITDA pre view. The company also lifted its organic net sales growth forecast. Retail giant Walmart Inc. and its India-based e-commerce site Flipkart said Tuesday that Binny Bansal has resigned as chief executive officer of Flipkart Group, effective immediately. Bansal's decision to step down follows an independent investigation done on behalf of Flipkart and Walmart into an allegation of "serious personal misconduct." Bansal has strongly denied the allegation.
