Hong Kong Jobless Rate Remains Stable As Expected

Hong Kong's unemployment rate held steady in the three months ended March, preliminary figures from the Census and Statistics Department showed Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate came in at 2.9 percent in the January to March period, the same rate as in the December to February period.

The underemployment rate also remained unchanged at 1.0 percent in the two periods.

On an unadjusted basis, the number of unemployed people totaled 112,100 in January-March, up from 106,900 in December-February.

"In the near term, labor market conditions will likely remain tight amid the generally favorable economic situation," a government spokesman said.

"Nevertheless, we will stay tuned to various external developments and their potential impact on the local labor market."
