Australia Jobless Rate Rises To 5.6% In April

The unemployment rate in Australia came in at a seasonally adjusted 5.6 percent in April, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

That exceeded expectations for 5.5 percent, which would have been unchanged from the March reading.

The Australian economy added 22,600 jobs last month - beating forecasts for 20,000 following the addition of 4,900 in the previous month.

The participation rate climbed to 65.6 percent - again topping expectations for 65.5 percent, which would have been unchanged.
