CAC 40 Slides As China Concerns Weigh

French stocks fell on Wednesday as investors fretted about the outlook for China's economy and remained concerned about the sustainability of Italy's public finances.

The euro held steady while the British pound added to gains against the dollar on hopes for a breakthrough in Brexit negotiations.

The benchmark CAC 40 was down 38 points or 0.71 percent at 5,280 in opening deals after closing 0.4 percent higher on Tuesday.

Luxury goods conglomerate LVMH tumbled 4 percent on fears of a looming slowdown in Chinese demand as the U.S.-China trade war escalates.

In economic releases, France's industrial production grew at the slowest pace in three months in August, the statistical office Insee showed.

Industrial production climbed 0.3 percent from July, the weakest since May when it remained flat. Production had increased 0.8 percent in July.
