As the results of the midterm elections came in, President Donald Trump endorsed House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for the post of House Speaker and promised support across party lines if she lacks support from her own party.

"In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by the Democrats," Trump said on Twitter Wednesday morning. "If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor."

Democrats are projected to take control of the House, and Trump called Pelosi Tuesday night to congratulate her on the victory.

The San Francisco Democrat, who has served as House Minority Leader since 2011, was previously House Speaker from 2007 to 2011.

Pelosi has not officially announced if she will run for the highest post for a Democrat in the country but said in her victory speech, "Today is about … restoring the Constitution and checks and balance to the Trump administration."

"It's about stopping the GOP and Trump administration's assault on Medicare and Medicaid … and people living with pre-existing medical conditions," she told a crowd of supporters.

Political observers have suggested Trump will look to use Pelosi as a "foil," as he is likely to face difficulty achieving major legislative accomplishments in a divided government.

Trump sent out a series of messages on Twitter after the elections.

With the elections over, the president said he plans to "get back to work and get things done," especially on the issue of international trade.

"Received so many Congratulations from so many on our Big Victory last night, including from foreign nations (friends) that were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals," Trump tweeted without specifying which foreign leaders he had heard from.

Trump claimed Republican winners were successful because they embraced him and his agenda and told those that lost after distancing themselves from the White House to "say goodbye!"

"Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well. Those that did not, say goodbye," Trump tweeted.

The president called the GOP's defense of their majority is Senate a "Tremendous success."

Trump also warned House Democrats against wasting taxpayer money by investigating his administration, claiming Senate Republicans would then be forced to probe Democrats for leaking classified information.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level," Trump tweeted.
