Automated manufacturing systems supplier Gerber Scientific, Inc. (GRB) reported a loss for the fourth quarter, reflecting primarily a 31% fall in revenue amid frail economic conditions.

For the fourth quarter, net loss was $2.3 million or $0.10 per share, compared to net income of $6.1 million or $0.26 per share in the previous year.

Total revenue for the quarter dipped 31% to $120.1 million from $173.7 million in the same period last year. Currency fluctuations, decreased revenue by $16.9 million or 9.7%. Acquisitions completed in fiscal 2009 boosted revenue by $8.7 million or 5.0%, the company said.

Product sales dropped year-over-year to $102.2 million from $154.9 million and service sales declined to $17.8 million from $18.7 million in the prior-year period.

Citing the detrimental effects of the economic quandary on the quarterly results, Marc Giles, Gerber's chief executive said, "Sales in the fourth quarter, normally our strongest quarter of the year, were essentially flat with the third quarter. The lack of any seasonal rebound indicates that conditions in the markets we serve continued to worsen."

For the full year, net income decreased sharply to $2.2 million or $0.09 per share from $14.5 million or $0.61 per share in fiscal 2008. Total revenue came down to $552.8 million from $640.0 million, as product sales reduced to $479.4 million from $565.9 million and service sales decreased to $73.4 million from $74.1 million last year.

The company revealed that it continues to experience delays in orders from customers, who were facing liquidity crisis, and overall weaker demand due to the global downturn.

Giles commented, "Nevertheless, while we believe our revenue level has stabilized, we do not expect to see any significant improvement in business conditions until the last half of our fiscal year 2010."

GRB closed Thursday's regular trading hours at $2.83 on the NYSE.
