Friday, the Indian market is showing a modest gain on the back of positive global cues. Short covering after over 5% loss since last Wednesday is also keeping the market firm. However, trading is choppy amid intermittent profit taking.
The BSE Sensex opened higher at 14,322 and rose to a high of 14,465 before paring most of its gains. The Sensex is now trading at 14,347, a modest 0.57% gain from its previous close, while the S&P CNX Nifty is trading at 4,269, up 0.42%.
On the BSE, the market breadth is slightly positive, with 1091 advancers compared to 761 stocks that are declining. The broad-based BSE 500 index is up 0.71%, the small-cap index is adding 0.89% and the mid-cap index is up 1.27%.
Among the major gainers, Tata Motors is rising 3.58%, Larsen & Toubro is gaining 2.73%, Reliance Communication is adding 2.58% and Tata Steel is up 2.01%. Reliance Infrastructure, Grasim, DLF, SBI, BHEL, Infosys and Sun Pharma are the other prominent gainers.
On the other hand, NTPC, Tata Power, ICICI Bank, ONGC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, HDFC and ACC are trading in the red. Sector-wise, capital goods, consumer durable, metal and IT stocks are leading the gainers, but public sector and oil/gas stocks are trading in negative terrain.
Reliance Infrastructure is rising 3.47% on reports that its consortium with Hyundai Engineering has bagged a Rs.1,500 contract to connect Mumbai's Bandra-Worli sea link with Haji Ali and that it is negotiating with domestic banks to tie up funds for the second phase of Mumbai's metro rail project.
Pfizer India is up 1.53% on speculation that its parent company Pfizer may revise its open offer price upwards to hike its stake by 34% to 75% in the Indian company. Jaiprakash Associates is adding nearly 2% after it raised Rs 500 crore through the sale of 2.5 crore treasury shares in a block deal to fund its equity investment in three projects.
Dish TV is up a modest 0.38% after its net loss narrowed 31% to Rs.78.7 crore for the fourth quarter ended March. Pyramid Saimira Theatre is up 0.59% after the company proposed to raise funds through qualified institutional share placement.
Elder Pharmaceuticals is up 1.15% on reports that it has signed an agreement with MD Anderson Cancer Center to conduct human experiments for its newly-discovered anti-cancer drug. TV Today Network is gaining 2.66% despite reporting a 40% year-over-year drop in its March-quarter net profit.
Opto Circuits is jumping 6% after it reported a 61% rise in its consolidated net profit for the fourth quarter ended March. Akruti City is tumbling over 4% on denying reports about a delay in its $500 million QIP plan by a year. India Foils is trading at Rs.21 after resuming trading post the reduction in its share capital.
