Infrastructure solutions provider for communications networks CommScope, Inc. (CTV) promoted Eddie Edwards, executive vice president and general manager of Wireless Network Solutions, as the new president and chief operating officer of the company, effective January 1, 2010. Edwards will succeed Brian Garrett, who retires later in 2010. CommScope also said it will restructure its global management organization to take advantage of opportunities for accelerated growth.

Garrett, who has a 30-year career with the company, would stay on until he retires later in 2010 in a advisory capacity for several special projects. Garrett has been serving as president and chief operating officer of CommScope and CommScope NC since October 1997. Prior to that, Garrett has held various positions with CommScope NC since he joined the company in 1980 as vice president of engineering.

In a statement, chairman and chief executive officer, Frank Drendel said, "Eddie is an accomplished leader with an extensive track record of success. He is the perfect choice to continue Brian's great work and drive CommScope to the next level through profitable growth, innovation and quality."

Edwards has been serving as the executive vice president and general manager of Wireless Network Solutions since the closing of the Andrew acquisition in 2007. He also currently serves as the company's executive vice president of Business Development and the chairman of the wholly owned subsidiary Connectivity Solutions Manufacturing, Inc. or CSMI, since April 2005.

After joining CommScope in 2001 as executive vice president, strategic development as well as the president of the Wireless Products Group, Edwards held various positions in executive roles. He was previously acting president of CSMI from October 2004 to April 2005. Prior to that and between 2001 and 2003, he was president and chief executive officer of OFS Fitel, LLC and OFS BrightWave, LLC, a joint venture between CommScope and The Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.

Prior to joining CommScope, Edwards served in various capacities with Alcatel from 1986 to 2001, including being president of Alcatel North America Cable Systems and president of Radio Frequency Systems. He also served as chief financial officer of Alcatel's Cable Operations in the Americas, and Americas area manager for Alcatel Cable.

Hickory, North Carolina-based CommScope also added that it would restructure its global management organization to take advantage of opportunities for accelerated growth. Under the new organizational structure, CommScope named three managers to report to Edwards, after he takes over his new positions.

Current Executive Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Solutions Randy Crenshaw is now named to become executive vice president and chief supply officer, with global responsibility for manufacturing, planning, sourcing and logistics. Further, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Antenna, Cable and Cabinet Group Ted Hally will currently become executive vice president and chief commercial officer, with global responsibility for all sales, marketing, research and development, product development and product management.

Bob Suffern, the current senior vice president and general manager of RF Power Amplifiers, will now become senior vice president and chief technology officer, responsible for the company's overall technology development and direction.

"With the Andrew acquisition and merger integration efforts largely behind us, we have strengthened our company and are prepared for new growth opportunities. I believe these changes will position CommScope well for the many opportunities ahead and help us support our customers around the world with higher levels of innovation, quality and service," Edwards stated.
