The four biggest bands in heavy metal have announced that they will join forces and hit the road together in 2010. Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth will all take part in Europe's Sonisphere Festival this summer.

The bands will join the touring festival for shows starting on June 16 in Warsaw, Poland, wrapping up on June 19 in Prague. The bands are still expected to announce more joint dates, though no U.S. dates have been confirmed so far.

The announcement comes with excitement and a bit of surprise from Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich. In an official statement, he noted the continued popularity of all four bands.

"Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's big four would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time."

Slayer and Megadeth will also hit the road for 26 dates in the U.S. on their co-headlining American Carnage tour, which will kick off in January.
