Tuesday, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (WYE) and biopharmaceutical company Amgen Inc. (AMGN) revealed data from the COMET, or combination of methotrexate and etanercept in Active Early Rheumatoid Arthritis, trial that demonstrated half of patients treated with the combination of Enbrel and methotrexate achieved Disease Activity Score, or DAS, clinical remission.

Results from the study showed that 50% of patients with active early moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis who received a combination of Enbrel and methotrexate therapy achieved DAS clinical remission, compared to 28% of those treated with methotrexate alone.

In addition, 80% of patients receiving Enbrel and methotrexate had no evidence of progression of joint damage as seen on x-ray, compared to 59% of those treated with methotrexate alone. Combination therapy with Enbrel plus methotrexate also helped patients remain more functionally active.

American College of Rheumatology (ACR) scores were also assessed in the COMET study and were comparable to the DAS clinical remission data. Nearly half the patients receiving Enbrel plus methotrexate achieved an ACR 70 score, compared to 28% of the methotrexate-only group.

The COMET study also showed that patients treated with combination therapy had a nearly three-fold reduction in work stoppage compared with those who received methotrexate alone. There were no differences in rates of serious infections or malignancies among patients in the Enbrel plus methotrexate group compared with the methotrexate-only group.

Shares of Amgen closed Tuesday's regular trading session at $52.66, up $1.67 or 3.28% but lost 16 cents or 0.30% in the extended hours trading.

Wyeth closed Tuesday's regular trade at $48.56, up 55 cents or 1.15% on a volume of 13.53 million shares.
