The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, has cancelled his forthcoming trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic because of exhaustion, said a statement released from his office on Wednesday.
"His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been experiencing some discomfort in the past couple of days," the statement said. It added that doctors have attributed his recent discomfort to "exhaustion", and have advised him to rest until they receive the results of medical tests.
The statement said that Dalai Lama will travel to Mumbai shortly to undergo some medical tests and added that all international engagements scheduled for the next three weeks have been cancelled.
Meanwhile, Dalai Lama's representatives in India said that the spiritual leader was "just postponing" the trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and not canceling them.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet to India with thousands of followers in 1959 after Chinese troops crushed an attempted uprising there. He is currently based in India and heads a self-styled Tibetan government in exile in Dharamsala.
Though Chinese government accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking total independence for Tibet, the exiled spiritual leader says he only wants autonomy for Tibet and not total independence.
