Three miners died in a mine tunnel in the village of Loacan in Itogon, about 125 miles north of Manila, reports said.
Itogon councilor Alexander Fianza said that the three miners, including a preacher, died after they apparently ran out of oxygen. The bodies were retrieved Sunday morning. It was reported that the three went inside the mine to conduct an inspection and they had forgotten to open the blowers that were required to remove the toxic fumes inside the mines. The bodies were discovered about 50 m below ground level inside the tunnel.
The latest accident comes after two months after a similar tragedy occurred during the last week of September when six miners died and ten others were rescued from an abandoned mine at the height of Typhoon Nina.
The miners are mostly impoverished villagers who risk their lives and make their way into abandoned gold mines abandoned by large mining companies without the requisite expertise or permissions.
