A closed court in Burma has sentenced 23 pro-democracy activists to jail sentences ranging from 12 1/2 years to 65 years for their role in organizing an anti-government demonstration last year in the military ruled country, said officials and local media reports on Tuesday.
Of the twenty-three pro-democracy activists sentenced on Tuesday, 14 are members of the Generation 88 Students group, while the rest included members of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) and a labor activist, Su Su Nway.
The 14 members of the Generation 88 Students group were jailed to 65 years each, while the NLD members and Su Su Nway were awarded sentences ranging from 12 1/2 to 24 years.
Most of the 14 members of the Generation 88 Students group were arrested for protesting against a fuel-price hike in 2007, while the others were arrested for organizing pro-democracy rallies in September 2007, which were forcefully suppressed by the country's military regime.
