China vented its anger Wednesday on a newly-released Pentagon report on its military power--which claimed it was altering the military balance in Asia--terming it as a "gross distortion" and interference in its internal affairs, reports say.

At a regular press conference, a Foreign Ministry spokesman called it a "gross distortion of the facts and interference in China's internal affairs" and that Beijing had pursued peaceful development of its military policy, which was defensive in nature.

The Pentagon report continued to play up the fallacy of China's military threat, and Beijing "resolutely opposes the report," Qin Gang said, while urging the U.S. to stop issuing it to "avoid further damage to the two-sides' military relations".

"We urge the U.S. side to respect this fundamental fact, drop the Cold War mentality and bias ... and stop making groundless accusations against China so as not to further damage the two- countries' military relations," he added.

In its annual report to Congress, the Defense Department said China was developing "disruptive" technologies for nuclear, space and cyber warfare to overcome the traditional advantages of American forces and which could be used to enforce claims over disputed territories.

The report also said that China was developing longer-range capabilities that could have an effect beyond the Asia-Pacific region. Beijing was continuing to develop weapons that threatened long-time rival Taiwan, though tensions between the two sides were reduced significantly, it added.

The latest spat came close on the heels of another after Chinese vessels earlier this month harassed a U.S. Navy surveillance ship in international waters in the South China Sea.
