(RTTNews) -
Fisker Automotive Inc. is in advanced talks to set up a plug-in electric hybrid vehicle plant in General Motors' idled plant in Delaware, according to media reports on Sunday.
GM's Boxwood Road facility, which was manufacturing the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice roadsters, and Opel version that was exported to Europe, remains closed since July.
According to the reports, the plant to be set up by Fisker would likely employ at least 1,500 workers and produce up to 100,000 cars annually.
Fisker is a joint venture between Fisker Coachbuild and Quantum Technologies that has developed a plug-in hybrid sportscar which it intends to begin selling in June 2010.
Fisker recently received $528 million federal loan from the Federal $25 billion Advanced Technologies Vehicle Manufacturing Loan Program. The loan will principally fund "Project NINA," to design, engineer and assemble Fisker's second-generation, $39,000 sedan, for sale starting in 2012 in volumes over 100,000/year.
