Rovi Corp. (ROVI:
News ), a provider of entertainment solutions, Monday said that the High Court of Justice in the UK issued its judgment on the company's patent infringement litigation against Virgin Media, ruling that Virgin Media infringed Rovi's interactive program guide patents. However, Rovi lost the case as the court also found that the company's patents were invalid.
Rovi, which currently holds over 4,200 issued or pending patents worldwide, had sued Virgin Media for infringing three interactive program guide patents issued in the U.K. The company said that it plans to appeal the court's decision.
Commenting on the judgment, Samir Armaly, SVP of Worldwide Patent Licensing for Rovi, stated, "While we are pleased that the court found all of the patents to be infringed by Virgin, we strongly disagree with the court's ruling on the validity issues, and intend to appeal the decision."
"We also intend to continue to pursue Virgin and other unlicensed companies for their infringement of our intellectual property, to join the numerous companies who have already taken licenses to our patents issued throughout the world," Armaly added.
Rovi said that it is continuing to add to and invest in its intellectual property and robust patent portfolio. The company has licensed its intellectual property to various service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers throughout the world.
ROVI closed Friday's trading at $29.65, down $0.62, on a volume of 688,800 shares.
