(RTTNews) -
Monday, specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company Hospira, Inc. (HSP:
News ), said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, granted approval for a 500 mg vial of azithromycin for injection in the ADD-Vantage System.
The Lake Forest, Illinois-based company noted that the anti-infective medication is a generic version of Pfizer's Zithromax, which had total U.S. sales of generic and name-brand azithromycin for injection of nearly $40 million in fiscal 2008.
ADD-Vantage is a specially-designed, two-part system that does not require clinicians to use a needle and syringe to mix the drug and the solution and lowers the risk of accidental needlesticks, increases workflow and can result in less waste due to stability and shelf-life factors.
Hospira noted that it is the first to offer azithromycin in an advanced drug delivery system. The company's specialty injectable pharmaceuticals offering includes about 200 generic injectable drugs in many dosages and formulations. In addition, many of its products are available in popular differentiated formats, a few of of which are proprietary, such as its ADD-Vantage System and iSecure pre-filled syringes. Curative areas include anesthesia, anti-infectives, analgesics, cardiovascular, oncology, emergency and other areas.
HSP is currently trading at $38.65, down $0.08 or 0.21%, on a volume of 0.53 million shares on the NYSE.
