(RTTNews) -
European Union (EU) nations will decide on troop reinforcements in Afghanistan only after the final results of the country's general elections are announced and the US reveals its new Afghan strategy, EU foreign policy chief said Tuesday.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of EU defense ministers' meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, Javier Solana said: "The position now is to wait and see how the results of the elections come out," possibly by "the 5th or the 7th of October."
"That will be the moment to analyze the situation," he added. Defense ministers are discussing the fight against insurgents in Afghanistan following the top NATO commander's call for a major change in strategy to combat them.
German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung said a new strategy, ensuring support from the new government, must be debated in the United States, "before we begin speaking about it at NATO.
