(RTTNews) -
With maximum sustained winds of around 90 miles per hour and higher in gusts, category 1 Hurricane Ida is headed north toward the Gulf coast of the United States. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued a Hurricane Watch from Grand Isle, Louisiana to the Mississippi/Alabama border. The watch does not include the city of New Orleans.
The storm is moving through the Gulf of Mexico, possibly toward the western Florida Panhandle. Forecasters say it's too early to forecast where Ida will go or whether it will make landfall at all. But they said it could bring heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas to the entire Florida peninsula. Ida could gain Category 2 storm within the next 24 hours, but is expected to weaken by late Monday.
Ida could reach the northern Gulf Coast by Tuesday. It is expected to move off to the east and southeast just off the coast of Tampa on Thursday as an extra tropical system.
