(RTTNews) -
Top NATO officers will meet in Belgium in December to call upon it members for troop reinforcements for Afghanistan, after the United States makes clear its strategy in the war-ravaged land-locked country.
The alliance is waiting U.S. President Barack Obama to make a decision on additional troops for Afghanistan before it holds a conference on pledging reinforcements. Obama has for weeks been mulling whether to send up to 40,000 additional American troops to the insurgency-hit country.
"Whatever President Obama announces will be very relevant to the force generation conference," NATO spokesman James Appathurai said. He said a meeting scheduled for Monday will now be split into two parts. On Monday, member-nations will commit units for NATO's force in Kosovo, the alliance's anti-piracy patrols off Somalia, and other missions.
On December 3-4, a meeting of NATO foreign ministers from the more than 40 nations will take place that will be followed by a meeting in Mons, southern Belgium, of military officers making up the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) at an undetermined date.
