(RTTNews) -
At least two people have been killed and six others injured on Friday after a gunman opened indiscriminate fire at an office building in Orlando, Florida, according to officials and local news reports.
The shooting reportedly took place on the eighth and twelfth floor of the Gateway Center building at around 1130 local time. Local reports said that many workers were still trapped inside the building, with the gunman still at large.
Soon after the shooting began, police officials ordered the locking down of all offices in the building and are presently conducting evacuation on a door-by-door basis, reports said. Television footage of the incident showed ambulances and police vehicles rushing to the building.
Police officials identified Jason Rodriguez as the main suspect for the shooting. The motive of the attacker is not yet clear. Witnesses said that Rodriguez, who had previously worked in the building, had walked inside and opened fire at the other employees.
Friday's shooting at the Gateway Center building unfolded less than 24 hours after a gunman opened fire at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing 13 people and leaving 31 others wounded.
The shooter at the Fort Hood base on Thursday was identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a US-born Muslim and army psychiatrist. He was shot four times by other military personnel, and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital under armed guard. Reports indicated that Hasan had earlier opposed his imminent deployment to Afghanistan, and wanted to leave the army.
